With so much amazing wildlife, stunning natural landscapes and rich culture, South Africa is a great place to visit in December. With a very comfortable average summer temperature of 25C (76F) its a great place for sun, sightseeing and safari!
Affectionately called Jo’burg by locals. Its the largest city in South Africa and often gets bad press for over safety concerns and cultural clashes. It’s not the prettiest city but it is a much more “real” South African experience. It’s often the city most tourists fly in and out of, connecting with other African countries so you’re likely to spend at least a day here. There’s some great museums on the turbulent history of South Africa, you can also visit Nelson Mandel’s former home too.
The capital of South Africa, Cape Town has a more relaxed atmosphere and with the stunning Table Mountain overlooking the city, it’s definitely more pretty. The beaches of Cape Town should be high on your list during December. There are some great festivals and events in the city this time of year. The fireworks on NYE are not to be missed either.
Cape Town is also famous for its fantastic array of restaurants and bars. Check out The Round House at Camps Bay for amazing views and a great 6 course Christmas meal!
A younger and more modern city, Durban is famous for the Zulu culture and it’s nightlife. You’ll find some great bars here and comedy clubs too. There’s also some stunning beaches here, especially Baggies Beach (aka Warner Beach), popular with Surfers.
As you’d expect from a fairly wealthy country, transportation is good here with an extensive network of roads and railways. You can easily fly to Johannesburg or Cape Town with lots of cheap internal flights to get you around. There’s some epic train journeys out Cape Town too include a luxury train to Victoria Falls.
