Winter breaks offer the perfect respite at a stressful time of year. Whether it’s a trip away for some winter sun or if you want to make the most of the cold climate, there are many destinations that can fit the bill.

Oslo

Norway’s capital city is a fantastic destination during the winter months seen by many as the winter capital of the world. Oslo has much to explore including its Royal Palace, the Vikingship Museum and Holmenkollen, the oldest ski museum in the world.  Stay at Hotel Bristol, an ornate Edwardian hotel whose elegance has been admired by many members of Royalty and heads of state.

For a truly spectacular trip, take an internal flight from Oslo to Tromso, high up in the north of Norway. Tromso is a thriving town which is home to some fine restaurants. It’s also a fantastic place to explore the majestic fjords and take part in some Scandinavian winter fun such as dog sledding and seeing reindeer. The winter months are the best time for the Northern Lights and just outside Tromso, away from the city lights, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular sights on Earth.

Dubai

Without a doubt, Dubai is one of the most lavish destinations on Earth. It benefits from having a great climate all year round which makes it a great destination for some much needed winter sun. Dubai is home to over 400 luxury hotels, and even its standard hotels are impressive. Most famously, Dubai is home to the 7* Burj Al Arab hotel with its floor to ceiling windows. Rooms in this sail-like building start at £1070 per night.

You’re spoilt for choice for things to keep you occupied during your trip. Without a doubt, Dubai is one of the greatest places to shop made all the better by the fact that it’s tax free. There’s also a whole host of restaurants to give you a memorable meal and entertainment facilities and bars to make your evenings special. For evening entertainment, I highly recommend the Dubai Fountains, which are expertly choreographed to music. Also make sure you visit Dolphin Bay which is the largest Dolphin habitat in the world. Here you can swim in the shallows with dolphins or scuba dive to greater depth.

Banff, Canada

The Rocky Mountains are one of the most desirable places to visit in the world and the resort at Banff, Alberta brings luxury to the Rockies. Located just 90 minutes from Calgary, Banff is home to three mountain ski resorts making it a world class ski destination.  As well as skiing and snowboarding, you’re also able to try your hand at heli-skiing, tobogganing and go on a sleigh ride. My personal favourite activity here is to take a trip up the Banff Sightseeing Gondola, which takes you to the top of the mountains in 8 minutes in a cable car.

In Banff town, you’ll find a truly multicultural atmosphere. Along the main avenue, designer shops lure the shopaholic whilst western saloons make for an incredible nightlife and a way to experience authentic Canadian culture. Luxury is personified in the Banff Springs Hotel which has been thrilling guests since 1888.

Bali

There is no finer example of paradise in the world than Bali, with the winter months providing glorious tropical weather. This breathtaking island in the heart of the Indian Ocean offers a traditional, peaceful way of life and make it the perfect getaway. Swim in crystal clear waters and relax on picturesque white beaches. Climb into majestic mountains or explore lush forests. Delve into Bali’s spiritual side by visiting one of its many temples- there is no finer example that Besakih Temple located on Mount Agung which dates back over 1000 years. There is also a real focus on relaxation and rejuvenation in Bali so look into taking a detox, relaxing at a spa or trying your hand at yoga. This is truly a trip to reinvigorate the mind, body and soul.

Located on the southwest coast of Bali, The Oberoi hotel is one of the finest hotels in the world and one that comes highly recommended. Set amongst 15 acres of tropical gardens, lavish traditional villas provide the perfect place to stay. The hotel has private pools and spas and best of all, it is located on Seminyak Beach.
