Oceania, Travel features

Located in the inner city, Surry Hills is one of the trendiest and eclectic suburbs and one that should be placed on every traveller’s itinerary. With a relaxed atmosphere, great boutiques, and plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, this is a suburb that offers the best of Sydney on a silver platter. If you have a day in the harbour city, stroll on over to Surry Hills and see what the fuss is all about – once you’ve stepped foot in there, you probably won’t ever want to leave.

The Beresford Hotel, 354 Bourke St

Owned by the Merivale chain (who are also responsible for The Ivy and Ash St. Cellar), the Beresford Hotel is a relaxed venue with great dishes, great drinks, and a great atmosphere.  With pastas, salads, and nibbles, the Beresford has a range of foods to tickle any tastebuds; as an added bonus, the cocktail menu is diverse and priced fairly reasonably – this way, you’ll still be able to afford your accommodation in Sydney.  This venue also offers summer movie nights, lunch specials, and other events, so you’ll never be short of anything to do when you visit.

Surry Hills Markets, cnr Crown and Collins St

Hosted on the first Saturday of every month, the Surry Hills Markets are a major fundraiser for the suburb and showcase a range of homemade and second-hand goods from some of the neighbourhood’s finest.  The Markets are open from 7am to 4pm and sell clothes, crafts, and other goodies.  If you want a break from shopping, the Markets also offer Devonshire Tea for $5.00 – a perfect way to relax and unwind, and enjoy the weekend.

Toko Restaurant and Bar, 490 Crown St

Rated as one of the best restaurants in Surry Hills by critics and visitors alike, Toko is a Japanese restaurant with a whole heap of style and a whole heap of choice.  Based on the izakaya style of eating (in other words, an informal style of dining), Toko offers sushi, a grill, and a bar.  The sushi is to die for and the seafood is as fresh as the seafood you find at the Fish Markets – plus, you can unwind with some drinks at the bar afterwards.

Belvoir Theatre, 18 and 25 Belvoir St

For a more cultural experience, Belvoir Theatre offers a host of productions from some of Australia’s most talented actors, playwrights, and musicians.  With something on upstairs and downstairs virtually every night of the week, Belvoir is the place to go in Surry Hills if you’re looking for some quality entertainment.
