Whether you’re being proposed to, or you’re getting down on one knee and popping the question yourself, the setting can be everything. It needs to scream romance and act as the perfect backdrop. After all, it’s should be the question of a lifetime. It has to be right. So to help you on your way we’ve picked some of the best places in the world to pop the question to your loved one.

An Alpine hideaway

There’s just something so romantic about the two of you at the top of a mountain. Skiing during the day and spending the evening wrapped up in front of the fire.

Our best picks of the Alps for a romantic and active ski holiday would be Zermatt in the Valais. The views are just sublime and the skiing is great too. Champery is definitely one to consider. This pretty little Swiss town has the charm you’ll want for a romantic holiday and is right next to Les Portes du Soleil ski area which is one of the biggest in Europe.

If you don’t ski don’t worry there’s lots of other winter activities here to enjoy and what could be more romantic than cuddling up in a chalet with a roaring fire and the alps as your backdrop!

The Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney is one seriously cool city. The harbour area creates a gorgeous coastline right in the heart of the city. It also buts two iconic structures with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge dominating the skyline. If you’re looking to propose in winter but want some sun Australia is perfect too!

There are a number of great locations to pop the question. The steps of the Sydney Opera House are a popular choice and the views from there on a sunny day are highly memorable. You can even climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a challenging experience but with a very unique view of Sydney. A number of couples have proposed up there and once you’ve reached the top of the bridge its easy to see why. Who could forget climbing one of the world’s most famous bridges and being proposed to on the top of the world!?

For a real luxury experience stay at the Shangri La right in the Sydney CBD. For the best views in town and an exclusive hotel feel check out the Park Hyatt Sydney, right next to the bridge and perfect views of the harbour area.

The Northern Lights in Iceland

Heading to Iceland between September and April you’ll be in with a chance of seeing the world’s best natural light show, the Northern Lights. Imagine saying yes to ‘that’ question beneath the night sky as the green and blue colours dance in your vision. It’s a very unique experience, just remember to wrap up warm. There are some great activity holidays in Iceland too involving husky sled riding, reindeer sleigh, snowmobiles and one of the slightly warmer experiences of the Hot Springs!

For luxury accommodation the best has to be Hotel Ranga located in the south of Iceland. Popular with celebrities and has fantastic views of the nearby Mount Hekla.

Florence, Italy

Some may say Venice is the most romantic city in Italy, but with so many couples getting engaged there each year, there’s the danger of it becoming a bit of a cliché. We’re thinking that Florence offers a better bet. The architecture is breathtaking including world famous buildings like the Battistero and the Palazzo Vecchio. Imagine walking through the quaint Italian streets together and relaxing in one of the city’s most exquisite restaurants. It’s what romance is made of.

Check out the Palazzo Vecchietti for a homely and luxurious hotel experience or the Bernini Palace Hotel for a more grand and formal affair. Either way you’ll be spoilt for choice in Florence for wonderfully italian romantic holiday accommodation.

Sahara Desert and Morocco

Morocco is a hugely popular destination with boho-chic British tourists, but it isn’t always the first thought when popping the question springs to mind. Marrakech is a truly intriguing city, but the real draw for a romantic trip together is the Sahara Desert. A night under the stars out in the desert is truly a fantastic setting for a memorable proposal.

There are some wonderful guided tours and luxury options too so don’t worry you wont be roughing it in the desert. You can either do day trips with private guides during the day or camp for a few nights in well equipped tents with servants to look after you. Morocco is a popular place for independent travellers and has a wealth of culture and colour to immerse yourself in. A great and very memorable place to get the all important question popped!

New York City, USA

There’s just something about New York that makes it the perfect setting. The Empire State, Central Park, the Rockefeller Center; take your pick. Many a movie based proposal has been film in the city that never sleeps and with backdrops like the Statue of Liberty its sure to help convince her you’re the man to marry! if you’re looking for a good deal on a ring then New York can help you out there. Head over to the “Diamond District” around 47th Street but do your research before you go. Know what you’re after and be sure you’re getting what you asked for. This is New York after all!

This being New York there’s a lot of quality hotels to choose from. The Trump International overlooking Central Park, Waldorf Astoria Towers or Ritz Carlton at Battery park are just three of many we could name. If you’re looking for something a little smaller and boutique try the Mercer or the retro style Bowery Hotel.

Where-ever you decide to propose to your loved one make sure you have everything ready before you fly. Book your restaurants in advance if you can and be sure to pick just the right moment. Mid morning or evening times are often the best with sunset being the most popular for obvious reasons.

Good luck and remember, you just have to pick your wedding and honeymoon locations now!
