Australia is a great place to get into boating. Surrounded by picturesque harbours, glorious beaches and beautiful coastlines, the best way to see these natural wonders is by having a day out on the water. Whether you’re a prospective boat owner, looking for a slightly spiffier upgrade, or just someone who’d like to see what’s on the market, boat shows across the country will help you to decide what sort of vessel is right for you. Here are five of the best from across the country:
The Sydney International Boat Show
The country’s biggest boat show, the Sydney International Boat Show comes to Sydney’s Cockle Bay Wharf in August every year. It’s a huge event, with a wide variety of brands and makes displayed, so it’s worth a look if you’re after a little dinghy for the weekends, or a luxury yacht to take to the high seas. Chat with industry experts, visit the d’Albora Marinas club lounge or just enjoy a glass of bubbles whilst taking in the view. If you want to save some money where you can, the show offers $5 tickets after 5pm.
The Melbourne Summer Boat Show
The Boating Industry Association of Victoria’s annual Melbourne Summer Boat Show is the premier boating convention for Victorian boat enthusiasts. It runs in late January each year at Melbourne’s Docklands. Kids get in for a gold coin (or free, if they’re under 5) and there’ll be plenty to keep the whole family entertained, with a variety of water-sport demonstrations.

The Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle Show
Sporting the best name of the Australian boat show circuit is the Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle Show. It happens in March every year at Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds, alongside the National 4×4 and Outdoors Show – so if you love having an adventure outside, this duo of exhibitions has both your land and water needs covered. The show features demonstrations from both boaters and 4×4-ers, so there’s always something exciting to watch.

Hillarys Boat Show
Also in March, on the other side of the country there is Hillarys Boat Show, which takes place at Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth. One of the best attractions of Hillarys Boat Show is the main stage, which frequently pays host to product demonstrations as well as Q&As (which have included guests such as boating author, Darren Finklestein) and kids entertainment from Captain Cleanup, whose goal is to teach the little tuckers how to look after marine environments.

The Adelaide Boat Show
The Adelaide Boat Show is a little bit like every other boat show you’ve been to, but it’s in South Australia, so you know that there’s going to be a hidden foodie element. Yes, this is a boat show that combines serious boats (with super yachts paying regular visits) with some of the best of South Australia’s fine ocean produce served in pop up tents around the Goyder and Jubilee Pavillion of the Adelaide Showground.
